BTW | SHOW - Lifestyle Jules - Fashion & Guidance For Weddings

Steven: All right so we are here in your office where the cool work gets done right?

Julie: That's right.

S: So just tell me a little bit about like we talked a little bit about style, we talked about kind of how you guide and develop a plan for people in general but specifically for this show brides and grooms. So if you could go in a little bit about maybe what you do for the beauty and the planning for them.

J: Right so I mean there is a lot of things that go into planning for your big day. You want your skin to look great, you want your hair to look great. So what I can help you with is kind of point you in the right direction as to what kind of help your skin needs, if its just basic facials, if you are looking to do something a little bit more, more med spa like I have connections with pretty much everyone in town and can kind of direct you to the right person for you and in your budget as well and then of course to planning out you know your hair. If you are looking for a long hair do and your hair is short, we have to look at "Ok how are we going to get to this place? What's the best way to go about it?" and even hair extensions now are so readily available and really you can get hair extensions that clip in and they are great quality for $100 or you can go all the way to $1000 you know extensions that are long term and we can kind of play with that and figure out and really develop a great plan as to how to get you beautiful on your wedding day.

S: Right, and one thing that we had talked about too is you know everyone has like a different you know personality and vibe in themselves so you are hopefully able to pick that up and then be able to really connect them with someone who's really going to fit in with that right? Because like we had talked about you know Sparkle Bar is very feminine but is also very hip and cool and fun and their personalities are fantastic there and so maybe that kind of bride would fit is really good there but another one wouldn't.

J: Right.

S: Right. And you are able to help them guide them through that like "no maybe you should go here". It's not cause they're better or worse.

J: That's right, it might be different right and I do and I know so many people and I can kind of put you with a different person depending on your personality and know kind of what you are looking for. If I have a bride who's never worn makeup before and is going to wear makeup for their wedding only, they are not going to want some made over really dramatic look, they're going to want something a little bit more subtle and so I wouldn't direct them to somebody who loves to do the dramatic and I love dramatic so for me, sign me up, the cooler, the funkier the better, but I'm not going to send that person who's never worn makeup before to that girl.

S: So really for the people going to you or someone like you, they are saving a ton of time and they are also kind of not like guaranteed but more guaranteed a better experience.

J: Oh for sure, you are not going to have any fails because I have already basically done the pre-work for you so I know that this person is going to give you exactly what she said she is going to give you at the price that you want to pay and so it's a total win for both, for me, for the artist doing the work on you, and for you of course.

BTW | SHOW - Lifestyle Jules - Health For Wedding Day

Steven: All right so we are here in the workout room which is not only your workout video space, but just where you kind of practice what you preach right?

Julie: Absolutely.

S: So tell us a little bit about your perspective on fitness and how that plays into a wedding.

J: Ok well first of all, I have my degree in exercise physiology. I was a chubby girl growing up and started at 15 years old working out and wound up majoring in exercise physiology so I love it, it's my passion, I believe in it, it makes you feel better and it's really a life long journey, you shouldn't think about it just for the wedding, just saying. We want you to get there for your wedding, that's a great motivation but I also want you to learn how to maintain it and that's very doable and it's a lifestyle change it's not about "I'm going to lose 20 pounds for my wedding" and then you go on your honeymoon and you gain it all back and that was all she wrote.

S: Cause that totally didn't happen on my wedding haha. I looked pretty good for my wedding and then like yea within a year I was like "Oh well I'm back where I started I guess".

J: And I think that's what most people do so when you hire me you know you are going to get me to walk you through it and coach you long-term and so you asked me Steven "ok when should we start thinking about this". There's never a time that's too soon to start thinking about it, whether you have a wedding or you don't have a wedding but you got to start. So it's all about making small changes and keeping those changes instead of trying to rush and lose 20 pounds in one month, "oh my gosh, my wedding is next month how am I going to lose 20 pounds?" It's all about just slowly making changes, getting into a workout regime, really learning how to be a little bit more aware of the foods that you are eating, it's not a diet.

S: Right.

J: And so I can coach you on all of that.

S: For sure. Well and like one thing I noticed too that we haven't talked about yet is like people have these like over idealistic goals about where they're going to be and like addressed altering doesn't happen overnight, it takes like, as far as I understand it, weeks. So, I mean I think you would be able to really help guide people with like a realistic plan is and be able to like really help them and keep them motivated cause I mean people often eat when they are stressed and a wedding is stressful so if they have someone like you to push them and be like "no like you can do this" and I think that is helpful.

J: Right and also becoming accountable now there's so many great apps out there; my favorite app is My Fitness Pal and just putting your food calories in it, into this app, you see and you're accountable for what you have left and so you can say to yourself "ok I have eaten all my calories for today, am I eating case I'm stressed of or am I eating because I'm really hungry" and you start looking at it a little bit differently than "oh I'm hungry I'm just going to go eat" verses "ok I ate all my calories, am I really hungry or am I stressful eating and if I'm stressful eating, what could I do different right now instead of putting food in my mouth that would make me feel better" and or you can eat, there are foods that don't have calories that you could munch on like pickles. Though pickles do have a lot of salt so we were just saying about, but that would be, so the day before your wedding you probably don't want to eat a jar of pickles right because you'll retain more fluid and maybe look a little puffy.

BTW | SHOW - Lifestyle Jules - Fashion for Weddings - Final Episode

Steven: So here we are in the exquisite closet of yourself with a very small supply of heels so clearly you have quite...

Julie: A shoe problem.

S: You have a shoe problem but actually if you are a girl I don't think it's considered a problem.

J: Good I like you, I like you.

S: Right, and um, but yea so you obviously have a good taste in fashion and you have a passion for it.

J: Yes.

S: So lets talk a little bit about how you plan out someone's fashion right cause we talked about bridesmaid's dresses the bride's dress in general, so kind of walk me through a little bit about how you plan that, how you help people work through planning out their fashion for their wedding day.

J: Okay well there's a couple things, first of all, we get in our minds what we love conceptually, what we think is amazing, but we have to remember what's going to look best for our body type and that is so important so what your think you love the look of when you see somebody in a magazine and you're like, "that's the dress I love!" does it flatter your body because if it doesn't, you don't want it because on that wedding day, you want that dress to be the most flattering, beautiful thing to your body. You want it to accentuate you, you don't want the dress to be the focus, you want you to be the focus so that is first of all really really important. So look at your body type and decided what is a great shape for you so should you be in a straight, skin tight dress or should you be in more of a Cinderella ballgown you know, do you want to be sleeveless or strapless? You know really looking at your body and deciding first and foremost, what's going to flatter it? So that's the most important thing and then secondly, is the bridesmaids dresses, that gets to be a little bit hairy sometimes, so I think the best way to make everybody happy and again to make everybody feel and look beautiful is to give the option of maybe going with one color or finding a designer that has different styles in the same fabric so that they can be similar but different and be able to again accentuate their bodies and make them feel good that day.

S: For sure, well yea and that's one thing we're talking about earlier is that especially if you have a large bridal party where you have like 7 or 8 people, the chances of having a variety of sizes is just almost guaranteed and so when you really kind of have the ultimatum of a single style or a single dress you really have a good chance that it's going to look bad on somebody which is no fun.

J: And yea, and you don't want to make that persons day unfun and unhappy, you want everybody to be really happy and have a really great day at your event so to find and to be able to put them in a dress that makes them feel great about themselves is so important.

S: So then how do you work through that then? Do you have like different dress manufactures that you work with kind of on a personal basis or how is it that you work through that with people?

J: Well I think the best thing to do, because we have price ranges, everybody has their own budget is to either go to a bridal store and kind of thumb through, but you know there's so many ways now to get a great price on a dress even I believe J.Crew has wedding dresses now that on bridesmaids dresses that aren't super expensive that you can go through the catalog that way. So it really, it's tailored to that person and their budget and kind of what they're looking at but once we get to wherever it is they think they want to be, then really sorting out and going, "ok are there a few styles that would work that kind of look the same that we could get everybody to be happy with price point and everything else?"

S: Let's see here so like probably one other thing that we'd like to talk about is, it's not wedding related, but you had a friend that you ended up doing and prepping for a TEDx talk, not a small accomplishment by any means and so just walk me through just a little bit of like how you walked her through your process of whether it was consulting people right for hair and makeup and just prepping her for that large event right cause that's also kind of a once in a lifetime type deal that has a lot of pressure

BTW | SHOW - Lifestyle Jules - Last Minute Health For Weddings

Steven: Maybe someone's watching this right now and you're like "I'm getting married in a week and I don't have time to like get a six pack now". What would you say to someone like that like what's some foods they can have that maybe are like slimming or at least help with like no water retention and things like that that can help maybe tighten things up for them.

J: Get rid of the carbs, get rid of the refined sugars, get rid of the pastas, get rid of the bread, and get rid of the salt, and stick with your vegetables and your protein, even get rid of the fruit. Fruit has a lot of sugar so even though we think we are eating something great, it does have a lot of great benefits to it but it also has a lot of sugar so get rid of all the sugary foods and stick with your proteins and your vegetables and you know that's something and count your calories. Calories in, calories out, I hate to say that but ten times your body weight today is the calories that you can eat to lose weight.

S: Really so low salt foods, low sugars can help be slimming I mean and like I've talked about, when I've interviewed other people it's like because you're having a photographer following you around all day getting those close ups, the eyelashes shots, the makeup shots, like different angles, even just losing a couple of water weight pounds is going to go a long way to have you know better jawlines and stuff like that.

J: Definitely helps. But not only that too, a lot of those foods can make your skin very sensitive as well so a lot of times breakouts are related to having those refined sugars tend to make you breakout so we're talking about that camera being close up to your face and having breakouts, get rid of those refined sugars.

S: Awesome. Cool. Now we are going to go check out the most ridiculous closet which is a woman's dream, not my dream, but I'm sure someone's excited, but a gargantuan amount of heels, haha, so lets go check that out and we'll learn some fashion tips.

BTW | SHOW - Lifestyle Jules - Intro Episode

Steven: Hi, my name is Steven Burkhart with Behind the Wedding show, I am here with Julie of Lifestyle Jules and she is going to be talking with us a little bit about what she does to help brides, grooms, and the world prepare themselves for the biggest day of their life, their wedding. So if you could just introduce yourself and talk a little bit about what you do.

Julie: So my name is Julie and I'm a lifestyle coach and a fashion stylist and so basically what I do is get you completely ready on the outside so whether that be your body, your skin, your hair, your clothing, your accessories, even the color of your skin, I can help you get your body and outfit perfectly ready for your wedding.

S: Awesome and you also have a little tricks as far as being a little budget conscious and little strategies there.

J: Absolutely. So you know at this day and age you can get the look that you want on any budget so there is really no reason not to get exactly what you want in the price range that you can spend.

S: Right, exactly and that is one thing I've talked about before is offline and otherwise is like everyone has budget constraints whether it's a million dollars, which some people would laugh at, but you know everyone has a budget from you know ten thousand to a million like there's restraints somewhere right and so everyone has to make some sort of compromise and so you really help, she really helps make awesome decisions to make sure everyone looks good.

J: And know where you want to spend your money, where you don't need to spend your money and there are a lot of tricks on that. So I can definitely help you with that.

BTW | SHOW - Vintage Chic Rentals - Getting To Know Amanda Chernauskus

Steven:  So this is the part where we talk a little bit about you…

Amanda:  Yay!

S:  So we talked a little bit about creative side, the business side.  Um..I have a coffee problem.

A:  So do I!

S:  You do as well?

A:  I do!  I have a bad coffee problem.

S:  Is this an every day problem?

A:  Yes.  Every day, more than one time a day since I was a teenager.  Double espresso latte every morning.

S:  I feel like that’s alot of caffeine…

A:  That is a lot of caffeine…I have 3 kids.

S:  Well I guess you got to keep up somehow!

A:  Yes I have to get up and make kids lunches.

S:  You gotta chase them down.

A:  Yes

S:  Speaking of food…

A:  I love to eat.

S:  I love going out!

A:  I love going out to eat.  I love to cook too.

S:  Oh really?  Whats your favorite dish to prepare?  Like if you make it your husband thinks, "oh my gosh this is amazing."

A:  I make some really good pastas.  I would say one of my simple dishes, my bucatini is pretty good.

S:  I don’t know what that is.

A:  Its a pasta with bacon and tomatos.  It’s very simple has a little bit of spice to it, and my cabonara.

S:  Nice!  And as far that I go eating out all the time so I’m very familiar with the restaurant situation.  So I live in phoenix, you live in chandler, so maybe there is some places that I should try in chandler.  Give me a suggestion.

A:  I don’t eat that much in Chandler.  We tried to get out of our bubble a little when we go out.  But there are some great places, chopped is a great place to go. For steak DC steakhouse in the downtown Chandler steakhouse.  That’s really yummy.

S:  So your favorite places are more in phoenix then?

A:  Yeah so I try to go to a bunch of different places too.  I don’t like to frequent the same place I like to get out and try some new things.  I mean I have some regular places I go to locally just to grab a pizza or whsteve.

S:  Whats your favorite restaurant in phoenix?

A:  Oh gosh

S:  I know this is tough!

A:  I would say one of my best dinners I’ve ever had in phoenix was Maestro’s.

S:  Ok I have not been there yet!

A:  Oh really?  That and flemings.  Their both kinda chain restaurants but their amazingly good.

S:  Hmmm places to try!

A:  Yes!

S:  I mean my favorite restaurants is Oreganos.

A:  Oh really?  I’ve been to an Oreganos, absolutely.

S:  It’s amazing and you always leave feeling like you could float away cause of all the food.

A:  Their proportions are big.  Yeah.

S:  And so lets see here.

A:  And I love sushi too!

S:  I’m a once a month sushi.  I can’t do much more than that.  I like Sushi Brokers.  Jasmine Tokyo, have you been there?

A:  Oh no I haven’t every tried that one.

S:  It’s a Chinese buffet but it’s like classy.

A:  Oh where is it at?

S:  It’s uh Scottsdale and Shea and it’s in an old Claim Jumper so it still has the fan where the belts connect them all together but their not running. They didn’t take down any decor.

A:  Oh I might have to check that out.

S:  They have sushi all the time.  Ok so we covered coffee, we covered food, is there anything else we need to know about Amanda?

A:  Well I do like reality TV.

S:  That’s right!

A:  Yeah it drives my husband crazy!

S:  But it’s so bad!

A:  That’s whats so good is that it’s bad!  It’s all these train wrecks, you just can’t look away.

S:  So what’s your guilty pleasure on the reality TV?

A:  BRAVO!  I love all the housewives and I like southern charm too!  I did live in South Carolina for a couple of years and my youngest son was born there so there is a little bit of a connection there when I watch it.

S:  I was always sucked into watching Jersey Shore.

A:  Oh I got suckered into watching that too.

S:  So yeah..

A:  Did I just admit that?

S:  Yes you did actually.

A:  I watched all seasons.

S:  Oh and The Hills

A:  Yeah I watched The Hills too.

S:  But as far as Jersey Shore (Dances around). See this move?  It’s almost the only move I have and it’s all because of Jersey shore.  Awesome well thank you so much for being on here.

A: Yeah it was fun

S:  For sure watch episode one once it goes live.  It is absolutely insane here it’s like a showroom.  You would not believe that your in a storage unit it’s so well done.  It was a pleasure meeting with you.

A:  Yes!

S:  And now I get to make the house drive back home.

A:  And I got to to get a coffee!

S:  Right?!  I had some on the way here…maybe I’ll get some on the way back!  Can’t say no to coffee cause now I’ve thought about it I’m craving it. Thank you very much!

A:  Thanks!

About Amanda:

Hi there and welcome to Vintage Chic Rentals...I am Amanda, the face behind the name!  Little bit about me, I grew up in the great state of Texas but am living life’s adventure in sunny Phoenix, Arizona with my husband, 3 children, a white Maltipoo, a Holland Lop rabbit and 2 zebra fish (and a partridge in a pear tree).  I’m an avid coffee drinker, I start every morning off with a double shot latte!  I love a good pair of high heels and an extra dirty martini add a good steak to that mix and that is my idea of a perfect date night. I have always loved decorating and entertaining, as I got older I found it to be something that I not only loved but was also very good at.  My favorite event that really started this whole endeavor was my end of the school year wine party.  My 4th year planning this I wanted to go big and rent wine barrels and some rustic decor.  Unfortunately I was only able to find one company in the Phoenix area that carried wine barrels, that’s when the light bulb went on and Vintage Chic Rentals came to fruition. All of our inventory is curated and hand picked by me.  I do like many different styles and have incorporated that into our ever evolving and growing inventory.  I search high and low to find exactly what I am looking for, even having pieces reupholstered and custom built.  I love events and making them unique, just like each and every one of our clients.  I will help you pick out the perfect pieces to make your wedding or event exactly what you are envisioning.  We can bring your Pinterest boards and pins to life.  So if you are planning an event in the Phoenix Metro area...don’t just email or call me...come see me!!  I will spend time getting to know you, your personality and your style.  Then we will pick out that perfect sweetheart table, lounge area, ceremony backdrop or dessert bar. http://www.rentvintagechic.com/

BTW | SHOW - Vintage Chic Rentals - Out of the Box Ideas for Decorating Your Wedding

Steven: When I kind of think about renting furniture I think of maybe like a photobooth set up or the sweetheart tables would kind of come to mind but you kind of mentioned a couple of unique ways that people have rented stuff for different parts of their wedding?

Amanda: Correct.

S: What are some of the interesting ways that people have used some of your services.

A: I'd say like my barrels are a really big hit; those are used all the time and these have a very wide range of usage. Anywhere from cocktail tables, to holding aisle centerpieces, to, i've had couples use them for the end ceremonies in the wedding, very unique, very you know rustic, something different, they make tables out of them, long tables, all kinds of fun things; backdrops, where they've been stacked up as backdrops and with a couch in front of them. A lot of different stuff.

S: It definitely seems there is like a lot of different ways they could be used it doesn't have to be what first comes to mind you know like "oh I don't know do we need a stage for a photo booth?" Maybe not but maybe you want to want to really dress up the brides getting ready room you know and maybe the furniture doesn't look really good so the photographer is struggling to get you good pictures or whatever else.

S:  Nice to meet you!  Tell me a little about yourself and your business.

A:  Well I'm Amanda and welcome to Vintage Chic Rentals.  This is my space.  We rent vintage furniture for weddings, events, and parties.  We do wine barrels, lounge furniture setups, sweetheart tables, cocktail lounges, cigar lounges, kind of all the fun stuff.

S:  You had me at cigar lounge.  That's awesome!  So what got you started?

A:  I used to, well not used to but still have a wine party the last day of school every year and 3 years ago I wanted to rent a wine barrel for my party and I had a hard time finding them in the Phoenix area to rent so the lightbulb kinda went off.  I love to decorate, I love vintage, I love to have parties, this could be a good business, and it just went from there.

S:  Right!?  And I already tried to invite myself to this wine party..

A:  Everybody does!

S:  Aparently is ladies only!

A:  It is ladies only haha!  It's moms last day of school.

S:  Fair enough!  And I'm not a mom yet ;). So awesome!  Well for brides specifically what do you think is the attraction to your business as far as the setup for their day?

A:  We bring the fun unique pieces.  Kinda the "wow I love this". I try to get to know them and see what their style is and see what they're looking for and then we make suggestions based on that.  Sometimes they know what they want.

S:  So you have quite the inventory so let's go ahead and show off some stuff in here.

A:  Perfect!

S:  So we have a lot of things going on in here and the first thing I noticed is just how organized everything is!  You have chair up here (hanging on the wall) this is like a showroom!

A:  Haha yes I try to make it as spaced as I possibly can for people to come in and get a better idea than just looking at a bunch of stuff.

S:  No that's fantastic there's all this room for walking around and like seeing stuff.  It looks amazing in here!  So tell me a little about how these pieces got to where they are cause not all of them started this way.  Like I'm assuming this [chair] was not gold when you bought it.

A:  No!

S:  So tell me a little about your process of the furniture and how it got here.

A:  Ok so I definitely have the eye to see the potential in something and my pieces are all unique and they are unique for a reason because they're one of a kind.  So I can picture a couch and I can have an idea of what colors I'm looking for and what I want to add next and what I think might be a good renter.  From there I find the piece and I kinda go look around look at some fabric, look at some paint, and put it all together.

S:  So they are more than just unique they are handcrafted!

A:  They are hand-crafted yes!  They are personally designed by me!

S:  They are!  And that's your unique touch!  They are not pieces you can find everywhere.  Some people think all vintage stuff looks this good when you get it.

A:  No it's not.  It's definitely been revamped to look a little more modern and chic but it still has that classic feel to it.

S:  Awesome.  Well I definitely want to see some of your most popular pieces.  And I believe is these chairs over here.

A:  These chairs are very popular, these are our "Will & Kate" chairs.  I bought these in downtown LA on a shopping trip.  I do travel around to find pieces.   I go everywhere!  I've gone to Texas, I've gone to California, I cruise auctions, estate sales, everywhere.  But these from downtown LA and are very very fun pieces. A lot of people like those.

S:  Are those diamonds?

A:  The are crystals!  They are definitely embellished very well.  They are beautiful sweetheart table chairs.  They have been used a couple times for baby showers for the mom-to-be to sit and open her presents.

S:  Well their very real so I would imagine any situation where you would want to look like a queen, that is a pretty good choice.

A:  If you want to emulate Will & Kate!

S:  Alright so what do we have on this side?

A:  These are Harry & Whinston chairs.  They are our vintage leather wingbacks and they are great for cigar bars.  Usually when the groom come to help pick something out, which isn't very often, their eyes almost always think "cigar bar, high backs, wingbacks, and they recline!

S:  Ooo that's nice!

A:  Yes!  Which I had a couple of brides request do not like them recline at the wedding.

S:  Fair enough!  And not all venues have great seating for the getting ready area.  These are amazing for getting good pictures.  I mean lets be honest people really care about their pictures so if your a groom and you want to look awesome that's a pretty sick chair to be in.  In fact, I'm going to give it a little tester here.  Yes, I do feel like a king!

Ok, so far we've seen two unique pieces so far for the cigar bar, tell me about this couch and how it started and how it looks so dang cool now.

A:  This is Annabelle and this is one of my personal favorite pieces.  She started out as a horsehair gold with a honey brown wood.  She was on a sidewalk sale in the melrose district in downtown Phoenix by 7th ave.  I saw those her character, the wood carvings, the size, just all the details on her were gorgeous, but she had to be redone.  She needed some love and updating for sure.

S:  Anything color that starts with "horsehair" needs to be fixed.

A:  Yeah it was bad, it was pretty bad but now we stripped her down I have a girlfriend that sometimes helps me and I sanded her, painted her, used some awesome fabric.  It took maybe 2 months and it turned out beautiful!

S:  For sure!

A:  She's definitely a favorite and is very versatile.  Classic, vintage, romantic.

S:  Yeah the detail work in the wood is amazing.

So something I've been noticing is that you have names for all your furniture?

A:  Yeah I do have names for all my furniture.

S:  So what inspires these names?

A:  You know I try to do more vintage older names, obviously, but kinda the character of them like if their a very romantic name I look at the look and the feel of them the style.  Some of them are definately family names. I have definately gone through the list of grandparents, great grandparents, siblings, daughters, friends.  Very special pieces have very special names.

S:  Nice!  That's neat.  I was trying to figure out if that's like I was just not aware of some brands or if you had actually named them.

A:  I do an you know it makes it a lot easier cause obviously you can see I have 4 beige couches.  So if someone calls me and asks how much for the beige couch on this day, instead of trying to figure out which one they are talking about we name them and it makes it a lot easier.  A lot easier for everybody.

S:  So this is one of a couple spaces you have.   Let's check out some of the other stuff you got.

A:  Let's go over there!

S:  So in here you have a bunch of different pieces with a little bit of a different aesthetic than we saw in the other room so tell me what's going on in here.

A:  This is more "chic" line as I would say.  There was more vintage here's more chic a little bit more modern to have an appeal to a wider audience.  The mixing of vintage and glam is very big right now so maybe taking a big gorgeous couch and putting an oldchippy trunk in front of it or flanking it with barrels is big so a wide range of variety.

S:  I think the last question I have for you is let's say for example a bride is interested in hiring you, so tell me very briefly the process you walk through with them.  So probably by the time they get with you they've got some details worked out for their wedding, so how do you guide them through the rest of the process?

A:  I always prefer for them to come in-person.  I do have some that just look online but I like them to come in person, get to know them, maybe even send me a Pinterest page or some ideas they've seen online of what they want or their reception or where I helping them with.  [I see] Their colors, what the venue is like, and I pull certain stuff together.  You can pull pieces out obviously as you can see.  I'll pull pieces out and have some samples of what I might think they would like or what they have already asked to look at.  And just go from there.  We'll talk about budget and what they are looking for.

S:  Sounds pretty simple to me.  Thank you so much for sharing!

A:  Thank you for coming!

S:   It was great to get an understanding of setting up things for your wedding and I certainly learned something new.

Thank you for watching and good luck planning your wedding!

BTW | SHOW-Vintage Chic Rentals - Working Within Budgets

Steven: We just were talking a little bit about educating the clients. The whole reason I am doing this show is not only for your promotion but really to educate clients on making good decisions as far as who they hire, how they spend their budget money, everyone has a budget even if it's a million dollars, that still gets divvied up between a disgusting number of people and it's tough to make a good decision on that. So, we kind of talked a little about really just what people get when they go through you and I wanted you to kind of explain that a little bit cause you have a range of budgets that you work for.

Amanda: I do, I have a very very wide range of budgets, I wouldn't say I have one specific type of bride, I have some that come in and just want a sweetheart table set up or just the sweetheart chairs. And sometimes that's all they need to finish off the details and then I have others that want the whole shebang, they want the whole set up, they want the design help, help putting it together. I like to say I can help them with their Pinterest boards, this is where they can come and get help bringing those really unique Pinterest boards to life. They can show it to me and then you know I can work with their budget too to help them achieve looks they want while staying within their budget.

BTW | SHOW - Vintage Chic Rentals - Using Decor To Dress Up Your Backyard Wedding

Steven: We have talked a little bit about backyard weddings. Now there is kind of a stigma with backyard weddings that they are a little gross. I had a backyard wedding and it looked amazing. Tell me a little bit about how you have been able to transform backyard weddings.

Amanda: I love backyard weddings and like you said the backyard stigma is ya know, but people are renting out villas and huge mansions and having backyard weddings and the backyard is kind of a blank slate to make it what they want so it's fun when they come here and we can fill it with fun lounge areas and different unique pieces and sitting areas and totally transform it into what they are envisioning. They can make certain sections you know, this is where we are going to have all of our high top cocktails hours set up, this is where we are going to let everybody sit and watch everybody have fun on the dance floor.

S: Excellent

A: Oh yeah, I love a backyard wedding. I love a venue wedding too though.

S: For sure, I mean I think the thing that really struck me is just like how you can completely transform the space, and especially if you are really detail conscious, this is a whole look you are really providing.

BTW | SHOW - Enlighten Studios - Best Thing About Weddings

Yvonne: I like to see them, I love it at the end, kind of I talked about it earlier, I love it at the end when they're so happy and usually like the hugs, I get tons of hugs, I, besides coffee subsist on hugs, I've been told I'm a great hugger.

Steven: Hugs are on point.

Y: I don't really know what that means but I love to give hugs, it's like the ultimate form of gratefulness, thankfulness on both ends and that is my favorite part when I see the whole thing come together and I am kind of like, "(*sigh) ok we are done yay". There's bobby pins and makeup brushes and everything kind of strewn around and I'm like "ok we gotta clean this up" and then I just see them so happy and especially when their husbands are like "you did an amazing job, thank you for helping my wife to look so amazing on her big day". So those are the great things that I look forward to at the end.

BTW | SHOW - Enlighten Studios - Creating Beautiful Hair Architecture

Steven:  So what can you do ahead of time so you can have a plan.  Are people's hair ready right away or what's the process for that?

Yvonne:  Well I may or may not be ready right away.  It might be ready if it has enough hair, well you want this look that's long and needs lots of hair, great!  Are you going to grow it out? What your plan with your hair?  Obviously it's your hair do what you want with it.  But I will suggest maybe you do this or don't do this or what not, whatever it is for them.  Then if they way "well my wedding is in 6 months but I really want this long hair". Well we're gunna have to discuss extensions cause that's not going to happen in 6 months.

S:  For sure.  But you can plan out people's hair a little bit.

Y:  Oh for sure!  Exactly!  And I say "Ok wel your hair is really heavy and so we're gunna need to get these cool things called a donut," and it's not the one that you eat.  But it looks like a sponge and it adds volume to the hair.  I know that when I'm working on someone's hair I know what I'm going to need to add to make it look like it's more.  So then I take photos and kinda do a rough draft of the architecture.  Then I ask them "Do you like this over here?  Do you want it more this way?  Do you want more pieces down?"  So on and so forth.

S:  So you actually catalogue the look.

Y:  Correct

S:  So that way when it comes down to them getting their hair done on the wedding day, you have a reference file you are working with.

Y:  Yes I take so many photos front, back, side, and I take all those photos on my iPhone and create an album for them and I have notes that I take for them.  I have a bride called Meg that has a wedding coming up and I know she needs a donut.  I know that I need more golden Bobby pins for Megan cause she's a redhead, need donut possibly get two.  I have all my notes and I study those photos a week out before their wedding and I'm like, "This is what we're going to do here, this is what we're going to do there."  And then that way I go into their location, cause usually were doing it wherever their getting married, we take all this stuff and pack it up and I know exactly the stuff we're using for Meg's hair so then I go BAM and we just get started.

BTW | SHOW - Enlighten Studios - What you Need To Do To Prep Your Wedding Hair

Steven:  So cool so a brides book you out and they come in a sit down in this chair, so what do we do? I just want to look so pretty! Haha!

Yvonne:  I'm so excited for you haha!  Yes, so usually what I do is they will usually have Pinterest photos. I mentioned that before...

S:  Who ever uses Pinterest these day?

Y:  Yeah you know that little website.  I'll go through their Pinterest photos and usually what I do cause they usually have a whole bunch of different ones,  I'll try to pick out the feel of what is the common theme of the feel of that.  Like what's really popular right now is a lot of texture a lot of bohemian type looks.  If I see that I'm going to know they they aren't going to want you know, hair number 237 in a certain place.  They're going to want more free and open.  So great.  So awesome.  But if I see more of a classic look then I'll say "what are you thinking about this?"  So I kinda get a feel for what their looking for for that particular day.  A lot of times a brides will bring their wedding planner which is great because then I can say "Are you getting married outside?  Is your wedding reception outside?   What time of day is it going to be?  Because then I can know if it's going to be hot, all these different kind of things. Because I've had brides that get married in the summer here, which isn't usually the time brides get married here, but then they want this long flowing hair and there having their ceremony outside and I'm like "ooo maybe let's not have your hair down cause it's going to be really hot that day."   So I tend to think of those types of things cause they are looking at the look and it's going to be 115 outside so maybe no.  Also I try to find out what their dress looks like cause hair down may not look so good with this kind of dress, hair up may look better with this kind of dress, so on and so forth.  So I kinda get a feel for that.  And we talk about that a little.  Then I go through what kind of hair is like.  Is it long, is it short, do you have a lot, do you need more.

BTW | SHOW - Enlighten Studios - Is It Important To Book Hair/Makeup Early?

Steven:  So let's say I'm a bride and I'm having my wedding in like a year, is it important for me to book ahead?

Yvonne:  Yes you should book ahead for sure.  100%!

S:  Why?

Y:  Because that's going to take the stress out of it.  I have a great hair dresser, I found the person I want to do my hair and my makeup or the group of people that I want to do my hair and makeup and I know I have them solidified for that.  Your good to go.

S:  So if we want you you might be busy?

Y:  Yes there's only so many weekends a year so we need to make sure.  That does happen and I feel sorry.  If you call 2 weeks out or whatever "I heard your really great and I really want you to do you hair and makeup for my wedding party."

"Sorry I'm already booked!"

That and it can be difficult to find a great trustworthy group of makeup artists professionals who come in and do your wedding.

BTW | SHOW - Enlighten Studios - Boosting Your Wedding Day Confidence With Hair/Makeup

I sat down with Yvonne of Enlighten Studios, a hair and makeup studio in Scottsdale, Arizona to talk to her about how getting your hair and makeup done professionally for your wedding can change how you experience your wedding.

YVONNE:

It's not so much how a person looks anyways, it's that feeling of confidence that they can get out there and walk and be like "I know that I look fantastic and I have these awesome people do all this beautiful work for me and I'm ready to do this."

And that is the best feeling that alot of brides will come and tell me, "Oh I was not as nervous as I thought I was.  I know I looked great.  Thank you so much for helping us all we all felt great we looked great and everybody told us how great we looked."

BTW | SHOW - Getting to know Yvonne of Enlighten Studios

Steven:  Alright we so hear all about how you nerd out on color and I'm guessing there is another issue...

Yvonne: This is an issue?  What makes you think this is an issue? (Points to coffee station)

S: No issue at all I see all kind of delicious favors here!  So you are a bit of a coffeeholic.

Y:  Yes I'm a hair dresser so it's hair and coffee.  I have sustained on just coffee on busy days and it's my happy place.  I'm not like so particular it doesn't have  to be some fruffy latte blah blah blah.  I mean that's great! Haha!

S: You need to bring in a blender for cappachinos!  That's what needs to happen.  This is actually somewhat incomplete now that I'm looking.

Y:  Now we need like a barista!  I grew up on coffee, started drinking at the age of 5.  My grandma got me started.  Lots of cream lots of sugar.

S:  It's usually a grandma thing.

Y:  I'm not really sure what's up with that but she had a percolator one of those old school ones, I'm kinda dating myself I feel like, but it percolated and then it came out and I was all mesmerized by the whole coffee experience and it smelled amazing and I'm like "wow!"  Lots of cream lots of sugar.  I can drink it black now in a pinch cause that's how much I need the coffee.

S: Thank you for watching this has been Yvonne with Enlighten Studios showing us around thank you so much for opening up your studio!

Y:  Well thank you for coming!

S:  It was my pleasure and now I need some coffee!

BTW | SHOW - Hair & Beauty for Your Wedding Day - Host: Enlighten Studios

Our very first episode of BEHINDTHEWEDDING | SHOW!

I can't tell you how excited I am to be creating content that will help brides and grooms not only prepare for their wedding day but give them insider knowledge on choosing the right vendors for them.  Who better to give them the ins-and-outs than the vendors themselves?  Thanks for watching and hope you find it helpful :)

Steven:  Hello and welcome to the Behind-the-wedding show with your host me, Steven Burkhat.  I'm here at the very noisy intersection of Scottsdale and Camelback at Enlighten Studios where Yvonne is going to show us all the cool stuff about hair and makeup for your wedding!   Let's go inside and check it out!

S:  Hey how you doing I'm Steven!

Yvonne: Hi I'm Yvonne good to meet you!

S: Awesome to tell me a little about yourself, what do we got here.

Y:  Well this is where everyone comes to get beautiful for all kinds of different reasons and especially for there wedding.

S:  Well why don't you show me around!

Y:  Awesome! Cool! So right behind you is the make up area where we get our makeup done and have all of our products and then we have our hair stations and out color station in the back.

S:  Ok so here we are at the makeup station so tell me all about this.

Y:  So right here is where the custom blend foundation.   So usually what we do is we have our brides come in prior and do a trial so we can go through all their photos usually they have a Pinterest page, cause everyone has Pinterest pages, so they'll show me all of different looks of what they want, of what kind of bride they want to create for their day.  It's really important for me to know that cause I want to be able to recreate that for them so they have those Pinterest worthy photos going forward.  But also I want them to understand that this is the day that their pictures going to be taken, out of all the days of their lives, this is the days that their pictures going to be taken the most so they really want to look beautiful.   For me my personal feeing on a wedding is that your look transcends time so you always look like this beautiful bride at 20 years, 30 years, 50 years, whatever it is when your grandchildren are looking at them saying "oh wow you look like this beautiful bride". So that my interpretation of what a bride should look like.  And with the custom foundation they come in prior and we blend that for them so

1. they have a perfect match for their skin tones and color and

2. they have the perfect coverage.

So there going to come in a spend a little time prior but there going to have that best look going forward.  So a little time investment in the beginning is going to be the best for their wedding as a whole.

Y:  That was the thing I think I didn't realize when I got married like "whoa there just a lot of photos."  So after I had that experience I want my brides to understand lets really let us make you look beautiful cause that camera is in your face whether it's a video camera or a professional photographer and all the iPhones everywhere we want you to look really really great for that day.

S:  Ok so what do we have over here?

Y:  This is the hair stations.  This is where I feel the most comfortable thing cause I have been doing hair for 20 plus years.  So this is where everyone gets their hair done and I've been a matrix educator so I work for the company as an educator for them for 18 years so that's been really helpful in my hair dressing career cause I'm been able to take all that knowledge and bring it to my clients.

S:  So tell me about color what do I needed to know if I'm a bride.

Y:  You should not get your color done the week of your wedding.  You should definitely have not get your color done the day of your wedding.  Just like we plan out what the architecture of the hair is going to be you want to have some plan of what the color is going to be.  So I always suggest about 2 weeks out getting your color done.  Go to your colorist.  Don't try any new things.  Don't be a redhead trying to be blonde or your blonde and now you want to be goth dark.  Don't do these things before you wedding cause it causes so much stress and drama and your trying to create a "look".  No major changes!  All major changes should happen after you get married with haircuts and color.

S:  Or maybe months ahead of your wedding?

Y: Yes like month and months.  So don't do anything right at the onset, 2 weeks out, or even a month out don't do any crazy changes.

S: So you sound super passionate about makeup, hair, especially hair, hair color, but one thing we haven't talked about is what got you started.  What got this ball of neediness going.

Y:  The whole all of nerdiness

S:  I don't know what else to call it.

Y:  I love it!   My uncle was a hair dresser and I always loved watching him do hair and someone asked me when when I was like 7 years old, "what do you want to be when you grow up"?  And I'm like, "I want to comb hair like my uncle tony and I just thought that's what he did, I mean he did do that obviously, but everyone looked so amazing afterwards but more than that it was the feeling I saw, that I recognized at 7 years old, everyone was so happy!  Nobody left sad.  Everyone looked and felt amazing whether they looked like they could be on the cover of Cosmo or not they totally felt like that.  That's how I want to make people feel.  So I didn't really know how I was going to make that happen but at 20 or so years old I was like, "phone book, beauty schools, here I come!"  And here I am!
